Emily McNair Design (As part of the #ShopSmall Blog Series)

This is the fifth post in my *brand new* #ShopSmall Blog Series

The Story Behind Emily McNair Design

I love making unique items in the highest quality textiles. I have a studio in my home town of Stroud, Gloucestershire where I do all of the designing and making. I also take in bespoke commissions and alterations.

I’ve been dressmaking and tailoring professionally for 17 years, and have worked hard to build a business around beautiful yet practical items using the very best textiles and produced with an exceptional finish. Emily McNair Design is committed to sustainability and where possible, I choose natural or recycled materials for my designs.

My Etsy shop showcases my collection of handbags and accessories, many are one of a kind and I produce 2 limited edition collections each year. And I’m always open to discussing custom orders.

Tour Round the Store

I was very kindly sent the Green “Mabel” Coin and Card Purse Wallet which is absolutely gorgeous! I love the stunning colour, as well as the combination of wool and leather. It’s handmade, making it unique and so much detail in the design too. It’s a perfect size to store coins and cards or a spare pair of earrings! Great in your handbag and an ideal size to fit any bag.

There is just so much choice in Emmie’s Etsy Store, I’ve loved browsing through it. There are so many beautifully made luxury accessories it makes choosing something quite hard! It’s making the decision whether to go for a purse that goes with one of the bags or one of the Wrist Clutches that goes with the gorgeous Jersey Top Shirt. These really are very lovely tops; so simple yet easy to dress up if needs be. A great addition to any wardrobe!

Emmie’s experience and hard work really stands out when you look through her items. A lot of people don’t realise the amount of time and effort that goes into handmade items and I really do love the finish you get when something is handmade. I’m also a great advocate of recycling/reusing/upcycling in one way or another and I love that this is important to Emmie too. She tries to use recycled or natural materials when she can. We all have to do our bit for the environment and it’s really nice to know something that was going to be thrown out can be recycled in this way.

My Picks

One thing that stood out for me with Emmie’s items is the fact that she has considered her audience and buyers. Sometimes you may just tailor your items towards one gender or a specific group of people but so much thought has gone in to who may be shopping in Emmie’s shop.

First off, Emmie offers Vegan Coin Purses made with suede fabrics which is fantastic. A lovely touch to reach a market which is ever-growing! It’s often not easy finding vegan items on the high street. For £5 (inc. free shipping) this is incredible value for a handmade gorgeous purse (psst if you use the Discount Code below these will be a mere £4.50) These are great sizes for an evening out or holiday where you don’t want to take your entire purses’ contents with you!

Then there’s the Tote Bucket Bag which I absolutely love. The navy colour is so versatile AND it is unisex! I actually think it’s such a great design and the adjustable strap makes it perfect to suit anyone, which is absolutely the idea!

The Little Touches

  • The purse was sent wrapped in gorgeous blue tissue paper sealed with one of Emmie’s personalised stickers. This was then placed lovingly inside a white box. Fab packaging and so many nice touches. This is reassuring to know if you are having something sent as a gift, it makes all the difference if everything is neatly packaged. The thought and consideration that has gone into the packaging is something that does make every difference when considering where to buy from.

  • Inside was also one of Emmie’s fantastic double sided “thank you for your order” cards. One side thanking you for your purchase and the other linking her social media and contact links.
  • As with many handmade items there is also the wonderful option of having them customised to suit what you want. For instance a specific colour of one of Emmie’s items can be requested. Especially handy if you have a certain colour in mind.

Coming Soon…

Watch this space, Emmie is planning on rolling out a new line of linen skirts and trousers. What a great idea, I’m looking forward to seeing these. They will go so well with the Jersey Tops!

This is such a great review Rebecca! I love your small shop editions and that you are super supportive with this segment in your blog. Emily is quite the talented lady! I mean look at those fine finishes. I really like the softness of the black coin purse 😍 I think it’s a great thing that she’s in the vegan market, a lot more brands are trying to be more conscious and you’re right it’s ever expanding! Love it! 👛
