Skiing in Austria Highlights

When we were looking for our skiing holiday we narrowed it down to Austria. Skiing in Austria it was! We decided to stay in a town called Zell am See, on lake Zell, in January and had a brilliant time. Now, Zell isn’t just for skiers, it’s very popular in the summer for walking and hiking and who wouldn’t want to take in such stunning scenery?!

So here’s some highlights of our holiday that hopefully gives you an insight into the lovely town of Zell am See. Starting off with the incredible scenery…

One word. Beautiful. Every where and every view is just picture perfect.

The scenery is just everything you imagine on a skiing holiday, obviously helped when the skies are blue and the sun is beaming. Zell-am-See is also very famous for Lake Zell which is stunning. With the backdrop of mountains too and snow lining the trees, it looks absolutely gorgeous.

We stayed at Hotel Glasererhaus. When we arrived we were greeted by Hans, the owner, who helped us out with a map and leaflets and showed us to our huge room. We were so incredibly lucky because we had been given a balcony room!! Yes, that’s right, a balcony looking out towards the beautiful mountains! Obviously with it being so cold it was the perfect place to store beers!

The Hotel had everything that we wanted. It was within a 3 minute walk of the cable car, the high street and was generally central enough to access everything! It also had a Finnish sauna which was ideal at the end of a long day skiing and  perfect for unwinding.

We chose to have just breakfast included so that we could try the local restaurants and eat what we wanted – You’re on holiday after all! We were not disappointed; breakfast was fantastic and such a great selection to tuck in to. This included a selection of cereals, meats and cheese, fresh bakery bread (the pretzel baguettes were an absolute winner with me!!), boiled eggs and fruit. Not to forget the most important drink in the morning…. Coffee. I’m literally sick of getting coffee and it’s an instant sachet. No fear, they had a proper coffee machine that even did espressos. We were in dream land.

We purchased our ski pass when we arrived and went for a 5 day one. Every morning we got the cable car up the mountain and using our map worked out where we wanted to ski. What I loved so much about skiing here was the amazing choice of alpine bars and restaurants scattered around the mountain! When the sky is blue, the sun is shining what more could you want than sitting under the sun with a cold Austrian beer? It’s the norm, you kind of feel out of place if you order a soft drink!!

The ski slopes were really good and after I’d got my ski legs I was flying about. I am absolutely no pro, but I’d say I’m more than a beginner as I’ve skied a few times. There’s slopes to meet everyone’s abilities, as well as lifts to get down the mountain if you don’t want to ski certain slopes down.

Skiing is not skiing without Apres-ski. We absolutely loved it. I’ve already mentioned above the bars dotted all over the mountains but then when you are back in the town the fun doesn’t stop. There were so many cool bars with outdoor seating and heaters the vibe was amazing. Our favourite place was called ‘Off-Piste Bar’ which had only recently opened. Every day from 5pm and 11pm they had live music which was brilliant. Honestly, nothing beats live music and you could request songs too. They played anything from Avicii and Club Classics to 70s and 80s hits. And again the atmosphere was just incredible!

We thought the food was amazing out here and there were loads of restaurants to choose from. One of our favourites was The Burger Factory which did the most delicious burgers. The restaurant is quite small but it is really rustic inside and the burgers are cooked where you can see too which I think is nice. Another of our favourites was Pizzeria Giuseppe which did incredible pizzas with plenty of toppings. I think we went here about 3 times it was that good!

All in all I’d definitely recommend a holiday to Zell Am See. Beautiful scenery, amazing slopes and fun-filled Apres-ski, it’s got it all! We had an amazing holiday with loads of pictures to keep as memories. Have you been to Zell before? If not, what is your favourite ski resort?

Thanks Sophie. The bread was honestly amazing, kinda missing it now! Ahh even if you don’t ski it’s still great as you can get the lifts up and down the mountain so you just eat and drink in the alpine bars! xx

I’m not a skier but your photos are absolutely amazing. And I’m extremely envious of the Finnish sauna, that would be very welcome on any holiday, hehe. I love your sentiments about having to drink beer to fit in too! Lovely post, Rebecca 🙂 and can I also just say your new theme is gorgeous, your site looks fab! xx

This looks AMAZING. I’ve been skiing before and loved it – although it was with my school so I’d love to go again and have the freedom to do what I wanted. I’ve always wanted to go to Austria as well because of the gorgeous sights.
